Back From the Dead?

August 20th, 2009

In the previous post I said I thought my video card was dying, but what I found odd was the fact that I could play some games but not others. I had been messing with some XP setting around the time everything started. One of them was the 3GB and the USERVA Switch. I had used this long ago, using SP2 and everything was fine. Now I use SP3 and I figured I add the Switch, everything seemed fine until what I’ve already said. Before I decided to invest on a new card I decided to try removing the Switches and see what happened, well everything is back to normal! Played GTA without any crash or artifacts! Lesson learned, try to keep a log(maybe here?) of any system changes.

Video Card almost dead

August 10th, 2009

I have a BFG 9800 GT OC 512MB card. I’ve had this card for less than a year and it was great except that my cpu was holding it back, so I upgraded the MB/CPU to an Ausus P6T and an I7 920. It was all fine, GTA 4 Looked/played great. Then I installed a BD drive and was trying to make it work on XP….long story and I still can’t play BD movies. Anyhow, one night I started GTA 4 when I started seeing these weird artifacts and I thought that it might be the video drivers, so I updated them but I still got the artifacts followed by hung app or BSOD and once I got a out of VRAM. I decided to try an older card I have, a XFX 7600 GT 256. I managed to test GTA 4, very laggy but it did not crash at all. So most likely my 9800’s vram is dying or dead. I can still get display and play videos and actually play some games, like L4D, COD MW. I will probably end up getting a new card like a gtx 285/295…
